Back to School Resources

As families prepare for a new school year, MC Community Care is committed to helping children start strong—both through our own outreach efforts and by connecting families to trusted community resources across Central Florida. Back‑to‑school season can be overwhelming, and no family should have to face it alone.

MC Community Care: Supporting Students with Back-to-School Resources

MC Community Care, the nonprofit outreach initiative associated with Men’s Closet, is dedicated to uplifting families and ensuring children in Central Florida enter the academic year prepared and confident. With a mission rooted in community support and kindness, MC Community Care has built a strong tradition of organizing seasonal events that address real needs for local families.

At the event, families can expect:

  • Free backpacks and school supplies — including notebooks, folders, pencils, crayons, and more.

  • Personal hygiene items to help kids feel confident and ready for school.

  • Fun activities and community engagement, such as face painting, balloon animals, games, food, and music.

  • Additional community resources and services offered by local partners and volunteers.

Founded to give back to the neighborhood, the organization believes that small acts of service can have a lasting impact, helping children feel seen, equipped, and encouraged as they head back to school.

Additional Back‑to‑School Resources in Central Florida

                              Local School District Support
  • Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) and neighboring districts often provide information on free or reduced‑price meals, school supply assistance, and student services through individual schools.

  • School guidance counselors and family engagement offices can help connect families to on‑campus and community resources.

Community Backpack & School Supply Giveaways
  • Local churches, nonprofits, and community centers across Orlando and surrounding areas frequently host back‑to‑school bashes offering free backpacks, supplies, haircuts, and family activities.

  • City and county recreation centers may also host seasonal events for school‑aged children.

Food & Nutrition Assistance
  • Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and its partner pantries provide groceries and meal support for families year‑round.

  • Many schools participate in free breakfast and lunch programs during the school year.

Clothing & Essentials
  • Clothing closets and nonprofit organizations throughout Central Florida offer free or low‑cost uniforms, shoes, and everyday clothing for students.

  • Some community organizations provide hygiene kits and basic necessities for children and teens.

Health & Family Services
  • Local health clinics and community health centers may offer low‑cost physicals, immunizations, and wellness services required for school enrollment.

  • Family resource centers can assist with enrollment, documentation, and referrals to additional services.

Ongoing & Year-Round Community Resources

United Against Poverty Orlando – Provides long-term support services including food assistance, job readiness programs, crisis support, and a Member Share Grocery Program that helps families stretch their budgets so they can better afford school-related costs.

HOPE Helps Resource Center – Offers a choice-model food pantry and seasonal programs like “Kids of HOPE,” which can help families with food stability during school breaks and throughout the year (including free meals during holidays).

Family Resource & Community Centers – Local centers (e.g., Partnership for Strong Families) sometimes have limited school supplies, homework help, enrichment programs, and emergency support for families in need.

School District Family Support – Public schools often have Family Resource Centers or Family & Community Engagement offices that assist students with school supplies, uniforms, backpacks, free/reduced meal programs, and referrals to community assistance. (General resource model reflected nationally; local district services vary.)

Clothing and Essentials

Winter months can be especially challenging for families in need. Organizations such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army provide clothing, coats, and other essentials. Community coat drives often supply hats, gloves, and warm outerwear to help children and adults stay safe and warm.

Year-Round Clinics for Low-Cost or Sliding-Scale Physicals

Even outside special events, these clinics in Orlando can provide school/sports physicals, often at lower cost than traditional urgent care or through sliding-fee support if uninsured:

  • UMSS Free Clinic Orlando – Free community clinic that may provide basic exams and help connect families with resources.

  • Shepherd’s Hope Health Center – Known for free and low-cost care including school physicals for uninsured/underinsured children; partners with community health providers.

  • Affordable Care Clinics @ Sand Lake Medical Walk in Clinic – Walk-in clinic with generally affordable services; call ahead to ask about discounted physicals.

  • Community Health Centers – Provides medical services including pediatric care; often based on sliding-scale fees for uninsured/low-income patients.

  • Esencial Walk-In & Primary Care Clinic – Walk-in primary care with affordable pricing for patients without insurance.

Free Back-to-School Physical Events (Seasonal)

  • Free Back-to-School Health Fair by Florida Department of Health in Orange County — Offers no-cost school and sports physicals, vision & hearing screenings, dental checks, and more for Orange County students K-12. A parent/guardian must be present and you should bring immunization records.

  • Partnerships like Shepherd’s Hope & Nemours Children’s Health — In past years, Shepherd’s Hope teamed up with Nemours to provide free back-to-school and sports physicals for uninsured and underinsured children at community health centers.

These free events typically happen once a year in late July or early August, it’s best to check with organizers or the DOH-Orange calendar in spring/summer for 2026 details.
